BENUE GOVT TAKES FULANI HERDSMEN TO UN.

The Benue State government has dragged Fulani herdsmen to the United Nations (UN) over alleged atrocities committed by the group in the state as well as their alleged recent threat to mobilise against the Anti-Open Grazing Law enacted by government.

The state government also released figures of people that were either wounded or killed by the herdsmen, property destroyed and damage done in monetary terms.

Governor Samuel Ortom presented the case to Edward Kallon, UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, for onward transmission to the UN when the latter and the UN country team paid the governor a courtesy visit in Makurdi on Wednesday.

Ortom said that figures obtained from a study by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency and the Benue State Planning Commission in collaboration with BENGONET, a coalition of non-governmental organisations in the state, showed the damage done by the herdsmen.

According to the governor, “Between 2013 and 2016 alone, Fulani herdsmen killed more than 1,878 men, women and children in cold blood from 12 LGAs of Benue State. Another 750 were seriously wounded while 200 are (still) missing. Over 99,427 households are affected in Benue and property worth billions of naira destroyed through a brutal scorch-earth strategy.”

He further stated that despite calls that the herdsmen be arrested, the Federal Government and security agencies were yet to arrest any of those that the threatened the state.

The governor called on the UN to evolve an approach on a sub-regional level that would check the alleged atrocities of the nomads.

Reeling out the damage done by the herdsmen in three out of the last 10 years of the clashes, Ortom said a 2014 report by the State Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs showed that “destruction which invading Fulani herdsmen caused cut across 10 LGAs of the state and exceeded N95 billion in that year alone.”

“Some of the challenges that we are facing today are regional in nature. The UN System has the capacity for regional and international synergies and we would, therefore, like to suggest that the UN System considers strengthening its regional approach to these challenges, particularly the destructive assaults by herdsmen on the peace loving farming communities of the Benue valley. This may entail not just a national approach but also one that covers the whole of West and Central Africa.

“For instance, the herdsmen and farmers’ conflict needs to address issues beyond the hoofs on the road and across the fields to climate change and degradation of natural resources such as water and optimal animal to human land-use ratios. It appears only rational that where animal to human population vis-à-vis natural resources use reach an imbalance, it should be the animals and not the humans that are culled,” he argued.

Earlier, Kallon stated that he had seen some “horrific pictures” of massacres carried out by the herdsmen, adding that they were in the state to have firsthand information of the situation by visiting some of the affected areas.

He noted that the UN was worried about the escalating rate of human rights violations and stressed the need to ensure that internally displaced persons (IDPs) were supported to enable them settle down.

Kallon stated that the team was also in the state to find out what the state government was doing and how best the UN could assist it in achieving results in the areas of herdsmen attacks and the amnesty programme.

The transparency and accountability policy of the Samuel Ortom administration has recorded another milestone.

I can reliably report to you that the N4.5 billion bond money which former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam connived with others and diverted to their personal use and still had the face to deny ever doing a thing of that nature has been refunded to the coffers of the state.

You will recall that a few days after Governor Ortom announced the fraudulent activity of diverting the bond proceeds by Suswam, the former governor came out swiftly and denied that such a fraud ever took place during his administration. He swore that his administration did not receive the bond money. In a statement he personally authored, Suswam wrote:

"Subsidiaries of three banks (FBN Trustees Ltd, SKYE Trustees Ltd, and UBA Trustees Ltd) were appointed as joint trustees to manage the bond for the benefits of all parties, and three separate accounts were also opened at the Makurdi branch of UBA Plc to receive the bond proceeds.

“However, following the loss of elections the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered at the April, 2015 General Elections, the bond proceeds were not released to my administration by the financial institutions”.

The above statements of denial made by Gabriel Suswam were followed by paragraphs in the same write-up which attacked the person and office of Governor Ortom. Former Governor Suswam shamelessly wrote further:

"To even think that such an allegation was made at a church service before a congregation gathered to worship God Almighty is most shocking... "

With the refund of the bond money to the coffers of Benue State by UBA, we now know who lied.

I dedicate this good news to all lovers of transparency and accountability. This is what Benue people voted for. The people chose a Governor who will honestly tell them how much the state has at all times. This is what Governor Ortom is doing.

Imagine that the refund of this bond money took place during the previous administration. No one would have heard about it. Gbimiiin would have been the response.

Kudos to Governor Ortom and his administration for achieving this feat! Congratulations Benue!

Former YBNL music record label artiste - Lil Kesh has announced his exit from the entertainment industry where he has carved a niche for himself to focus on business.

Keshinro Ololade, popularly known by his stage name Lil Kesh has announced his resignation from the music industry to focus on "business".

 

This was revealed by the young artiste who raps in Yoruba language in a short video that is making rounds on social media. 

 

In his words:

 

"Okay...announcement....I quit music. I am a businessman now"

 

The 22-year old who grew up in the ghetto area of Bariga, Somolu in Lagos State failed to disclose further the motivating factor(s) of his stunning decision in the video analysed by TORI NEWS. Lil Kesh's line of business is also unknown as he didn't give details.

 

Some social media users are alleging that Lil Kesh's action is just a publicity stunt to draw media attention to himself after a poor run of recent events in his musical career.

 

He rose to fame after his chart-topping song titled "Shoki" rose to critical acclaim from music critics. He was signed to YBNL, the record label of popular Nigerian rapper, Olamide Adedeji popularly called Olamide Badoo.

The short-term effects of a stomach bug suck: cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, and an inability to stray more than a few feet from the toilet.

But the long-term effects might be way more serious, research from Georgetown University Medical Center suggests.

That’s because when you get an upper GI infection—like in your esophagus, stomach, or the first section of your intestine—your body produces a certain protein called alpha-synuclein to aid in your immune response to fight off the bug, the researchers write in the Journal of Innate Immunity.

After taking intestinal biopsies in children with upper GI distress and intestinal-transplant patients infected with diarrhea-causing norovirus, the researchers discovered they both showed higher expression of the alpha-synuclein protein.

That’s the protein implicated in conditions like Parkinson’s, a neurodegenerative disorder that affects your movement.

It can’t be cured, though its symptoms can be treated.

In most cases, the influx of alpa-synuclein is a good thing. When the protein is triggered in normal amounts following an stomach bug, it attracts your white blood cells to the affected area to fight it off, explains study author Michael Zasloff, M.D., Ph.D., in a release.

The protein produced by one nerve cell can spread to others, allowing it to protect the nervous system as well as the GI tract.

The protein can also use nerves that connect the GI tract to the brainstem as transit, providing access to the brain.

But too much of the protein—say, through multiple or chronic gut infections—can become toxic.

It overwhelms your body’s system responsible for clearing it out, damaging nerves and leading to inflammation.

The buildup of this protein may lead to those neurodegenerative diseases.

The link makes sense, the researchers say. Many patients with Parkinson’s report chronic constipation, which can result from nerve damage in the gut decades before the brain symptoms begin.

The clinical implications of these finding down the line are intriguing: For instance, a clinical trial testing a drug that reduces the formation of toxic alpha-synuclein clumps is currently underway.

Agency says Codeine is most abused drug in Nasarawa

Ethan revealed that the command had secured convictions of 39 drug barons out of 42 arrested, and had rehabilitated 171 drug users.



National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that the cough syrup, Codeine, is the most abused drug in Nasarawa State.

Mr Sumaila Ethan, NDLEA Commander in the state made the disclosure at a news conference held at the agency’s state headquarters in Lafia on Tuesday to commemorate 2017 UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Ethan expressed sadness on the rampant use of the syrup, adding that it was widely abused by both men, women, teenage boys and girls across the state, thereby causing grave concern for authorities and parents.

He said “it is the reality in Nasarawa State; Codeine is the most abused drug in the state.

“We gathered through reliable intelligence that codeine is more abused than any other drug. That is why we are calling on parents and well wishers to always be on alert.”

The commander explained that the huge challenge in curbing the rampant abuse of the drug stemmed from the fact that it was a cough syrup bought over the counter and legally approved to be used in treating cough.

He added that anyone could walk into a pharmacy and buy it, “so, its easy accessibility and availability is a major challenge for us even though these shops are not expected to sell without prescription.”

Ethan said the only effective way of reducing the rampant use of codeine in the state was through useful intelligence.

He this was the reason why the command recently deployed intelligence officers to gather information on how to reduce the rampant use of the drug.

He revealed that the command had secured convictions of 39 drug barons out of 42 arrested, and had rehabilitated 171 drug users.

He said the 42 drug barons were arrested between July 2016 and June 2017 in various locations in the state with about 700 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs seized during the period.

“The high rate of convictions may have contributed to reducing the rate of drug trafficking in the state.

“Our aggressive counselling programme also ensured that 171 drug users were rehabilitated, some came for the rehabilitation out of their own free will,” he said.

He urged parents to strengthen their relationship with their children to prevent drug abuse and other vices inimical to societal peace and development.

He said the global theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Listen first’.

”When parents reach out to young persons, listen to them and share in their concerns, then help them build positive attitudes and relevant skills needed to prevent drug abuse and vices,” he said.

The 2017 UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was supposed to kick-start on June 26 which is the day chosen every year for the celebration.

However, due to the Muslim celebration of Eid-el fitr to mark the end of the Holy month of Ramadan, it was shifted to June 27 and ended on July 4 with a press conference.
