The Super Eagles’ striker Peter Odemwingie who joined the English outfit in 2014 has reached an agreement with Stoke City over a new contract that will keep him at the Britannia Stadium until June 2016. His initial 18-month contract at Stoke expired this summer,
Odemwingie has netted only five times in all 23 appearances for the Potters and has now been rewarded with a further one year deal and will play a part in the 2015/16 campaign.
The former Lille of France goal scorer returned from an eight months long injury to first team action against Sunderland in April and could only manage eight league appearances last season.
“He suffered an unfortunate injury last season after making a big impression immediately after joining the Club,” Stoke City Chief Executive Tony Scholes told the club’s website.
“Peter has worked incredibly hard to battle back from this to regain full fitness. He’s a popular figure not just in the dressing room but with Club staff and supporters so we are thrilled to keep him on board this season.”
Since moving to Britannia Stadium, Odemwingie has recovered his form and earned himself a recall to the Super Eagles featuring at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil where he netted the winner against Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Peter Osaze Odemwingie was born in Tashkent, Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union to a Nigerian father (Peter Odemwingie Sr.) and a Russian mother (Raisa), both of whom were medical students.
He moved with his family to Nigeria when he was two years old before returning to Russia to complete his secondary education. Whilst living in Russia he played in the youth teams atKAMAZ and CSKA Moscow. At the age of 17 he moved back to Nigeria and after spending a short time with amateurs AS Racines Lagos he became a professional with Nigeria PremierLeague side Bendel Insurance, where he scored 19 goals in 53 league appearances from 2000 to 2002.
