The NFF had earlier reinstated the coach in 2019.

Announcing Salisu’s return in 2019, NFF said, “The federation has noted that the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Salisu Yusuf, has now fully served the one-year suspension clamped on him last year.”

Bandits Bomb Abuja-Kaduna Train (Photo)

Bandits have damaged a major rail infrastructure after bombing an Abuja-Kaduna bound train.

The attack according to Peoples Gazette happened on Wednesday.

Recall that we had earlier reported how a former senator, Shehu Sani raised alarm on Twitter after the train he rode derailed following the bomb attack by bandits.

Gazetted reported that the attacked inflicted technical damages on the country’s major rail infrastructure.

Mr Sani, in a telephone exchange with Peoples Gazette over the incident, said the bandits were targeting the trains in order to dispose of passengers of their cash and other valuable possessions. He also said the attackers opened fire on the train driver.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Railway in Abuja did not immediately return a request seeking comments on Thursday morning.

Bandits have repeatedly targeted the railway between the nation’s capital and the key northern city, which has become the preferred route for passengers seeking to avoid the perilous three-hour journey by road.

The deadly gangs have raided military bases and shot down at least one reconnaissance jet of the Nigerian Air Force. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the military paid a ransom to the bandits to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari’s plane from being shot down.

The president has repeatedly vowed to be ruthless against the attackers largely responsible for widespread abduction and plunder of communities across Nigeria’s northwestern region.

But security agencies are warning that the gangs are becoming more armed with sophisticated combat equipment that would make it more difficult to defeat them.

R. Kelly is placed on suicide watch weeks after being convicted of sex trafficking charges in New York

R. Kelly is placed on suicide watch weeks after being convicted of sex trafficking charges in New York

R.Kelly's lawyer has revealed that the Grammy award winning singer has been placed on suicide watch, weeks after a New York Jury found him guilty of Child abuse and sexual offences.

Kelly who faces four separate charges alleging sexual abuse in state court in Chicago and a child prostitution charge in Minnesota faces up to life in prison after he was found guilty for similar offences in New York.

His lawyer told a federal judge in Chicago on Wednesday, October 20,
that he and another of Kelly's attorneys will be in trial on other cases through July next year so U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber has now set his Chicago trial for August 1, 2022

'I think he's talking about bringing in new lawyers in New York,' Kelly's lawyer Greenberg told U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber.

"He has since been placed on suicide watch"

In the first court hearing since a jury found Kelly guilty three weeks ago, attorneys told the judge they estimated that Kelly's case, along with those of co-defendants Derrell McDavid and Milton 'June' Brown, would last three to four weeks.

Kelly, who remains jailed in New York, was listening to the hearing on a conference call but he did not speak. His sentencing there is scheduled for May 4 and he faces up to life in prison.

Legal experts have said there is a possibility that prosecutors could drop the charges in state court if he receives a lengthy prison sentence in New York.

A New York jury found him guilty of 12 individual illegal acts, including sex with underage girls as well as a 1994 scheme to bribe an Illinois public aid official to obtain a fake ID for 15-year-old singer Aaliyah so the two could get illegally married. Kelly was 24 at the time.

Battle At Synagogue Church: TB Joshua’s Family, Disciples’ Crisis Worsens, Trustee Alleges Threat To Life

The trusteet said this was because of their perceived closeness to the late cleric and supposed knowledge of important details of the church not known to the family.

According to a report by The PUNCH, the leadership and succession crises at the Synagogue Church of All Nations may not be over as a member of the Board of Trustees, Joseph David, has raised the alarm over alleged threats to his life and those of other leaders of the ministry.

David, who has gone into hiding with other disciples of the late founder of the church, Prophet Temitope Joshua, aka TB Joshua, claimed that the family of the founder was using law enforcement agents to hunt them.

He said this was because of their perceived closeness to the late cleric and supposed knowledge of important details of the church not known to the family.

The Delta State indigene, who spoke to our correspondent from his hideout, alleged that the wife of the founder, Evelyn Joshua, was making spirited attempts to consolidate power around her, adding that influential followers of TB Joshua had been chased away, including foreigners.

He said, “The ministry had disciples, who handled the operation, administration and spiritual affairs of the church. Among them were five prophets, who were always with Prophet TB Joshua.

“The prophet’s wife was never active in the administration of the church. She only functioned ceremoniously, maybe to receive awards for him.

“Before the prophet passed on, he was interviewed by a newspaper, where he answered the question of succession. He said the church is not a family thing, and that was why his wife was not always seen with him.

“Around the period he granted the interview, he had removed her from being a trustee of the church. But she did not know she had been removed until he died.”

David said after TB Joshua’s death, the church had two trustees left – the cleric’s daughter, Promise Joshua, and himself.

He noted that trouble started during a meeting to fill the space left by the late cleric, who was the third trustee of the church.

The Yaba College of Technology graduate said two family members – the prophet’s first daughter and his wife – were suggested by a group, adding that he kicked against it to avoid being easily overrun and removed by the family members.

The 52-year-old said he suggested that if the duo would join, then more non-family members should be added to make for balance of power, an idea that was rejected by the family, as the meeting ended without a resolution.

The evangelist said from that point, there was mutual suspicion between the family and the group of disciples led by him.

He said the suspicion was fuelled by the fear of the family that they were in possession of things that the family did not know about.

“Actually, immediately the man of God passed on, the wife started investigating us and our accounts. We don’t take salaries, and we are not exposed to any issue of money.

“But due to suspicion, she took over the administration of the ministry. All the workers started reporting to her.

“For the 27 years that I was in that ministry, she never handled any matter of administration. But she started making people turn their backs on the disciples, saying we are thieves and robbers. As a result, church workers started refusing instructions.

“Our movement was restricted; our personal freedom was infringed on. We could not shout because we thought this was a family issue and we could bear it,” he added.

David said a man was later asked to mediate between the disciples and the family, adding that the intervention did not work out

He said his group later decided to concede to the family and allow TB Joshua’s wife take over the running of the church.

The cleric said the disciples were, however, shocked when he reached out to the mediator and they were told that the situation had reached a “gunpowder status.”

“He said for us to avoid the disaster that was coming, all of us as disciples must come together and sign an undertaking to declare Mrs Evelyn Joshua as the new GO of the church and we must sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour. And we should forward all that to him and maybe he would ‘unwalk’ the situation to avoid the trouble that was coming. We saw this as a threat, and we did not know how to respond to his message,” he added.

David noted that the matter reached a climax on September 9 when the family allegedly invited some church members and declared Evelyn as the chairman of the board of trustees and general overseer after obtaining a court order.

Simultaneously, he said security agents went to the Prayer Mountain and dragged out some of the disciples after taking their phones, adding that some workers in the church were also taken to the gallery.

He said, “That evening, all the Nigerian evangelists of TB Joshua, some of whom had stayed with the prophet for 28 to 29 years, the least is 20 years, were sent out.

“But before then, their second daughter, Promise, came with letters from the EFCC and distributed to them before they left.

“Most of the prophets, both Nigerian and foreign, she accused them of theft, fraud and money laundering. After she removed the Nigerians, she threatened the foreign ones that they should go back to their countries. Madam said she did not want any discipleship again.”

The evangelist recalled that before the events of that day, Promise had written to the Nigeria Immigration Service to demand that the residency status of the foreigners be reviewed because their services were no longer needed.

He said when he was informed about the call, he went to Abuja to stop the process because the foreigners were still useful.

According to him, the EFCC had since launched a search for him and others, saying their lives were under threat.

He said, “As we are talking now, we are hiding in a hotel. The EFCC came and we were warned that they were looking for us and we should stay in our rooms. Unfortunately, one of our sisters walked into them and they took her away, despite the fact that we had a restraining order.

“The question is, ‘Why is this woman using the arms of the law to intimidate innocent people?’ The charges at the EFCC against us are completely baseless because we are not in the position to launder money or steal; cash does not go through us. Those who work in the accounts have explained the procedure to her, but she is not listening.

“Now, she has gained control over everything and she is still chasing us. We have tried to sympathise with the family, but we also want the world to hear our side of the story.”

PUNCH Panorama learnt that aside from the alleged stealing and money laundering charges, the EFCC was also looking into allegations of misappropriation of the burial funds of TB Joshua, in which the disciples were implicated.

TB Joshua’s daughter, Promise, said the allegations against the family were unfounded, adding that David and others were only trying to give the church a bad name because their atrocities were exposed.

The 24-year-old explained that the family saw CCTV footage of some persons moving money from the church, claiming that some of the drivers involved in the act had made confessional statements indicting the disciples.

Promise also denied that the family was chasing away those who worked with her father. She said they were only asked to leave pending when the church would resume.

She said, “Everything that happened here was recorded and at the right time, depending on how everything goes, it will be put out for the public to see.

"The constitution of the church was followed to the latter and that was how my mum became a trustee. The day it happened, concerned members of the church appealed to the Corporate Affairs Commission and everything was done legally.

“From the beginning of the ministry, there have always been three trustees. The second time my dad made a change, the board consisted of my dad, mum and my dad’s nephew, Hassan.

“Last year, my dad wanted to put me on the board. His nephew, who used to go to court for him (over the church building collapse), left the church. That was how Joseph (David) was brought in. He did not even know he was a trustee until my dad passed on.

“The only reason my dad made him a trustee was for him to attend the court sessions. My dad would not want my mum to be going to court for him. Joseph was the one that was following Hassan, who left last year.”

On the case with the EFCC, Promise said after her father’s death, a committee was created.

She explained that during the period, the family got reports of heavy movements of cash.

“Even the drivers they were using to move the money were the ones reporting these things. There is also a video where they were caught moving the money. The church lawyers then advised that we should report to the authorities and that was how they were invited.

“The foreigners, who were called to carry the money without knowing what it was, went to the EFCC and were released after they were cleared to go back to their countries with the intention of coming back in about a month. They were not deported; they are coming back.

“These people talking are those I believe are guilty; all the other ones went to the EFCC and returned after they were interviewed. All they had to do was to explain what happened because there is video evidence. I don’t know why they are running; if you are not guilty, go and explain yourself.”

Asked why the foreigners were reported to the authorities, Promise said since the funeral of the late prophet, there had not been any activity in the church.

“And we don’t really feel we should have workers that we don’t need. That was the idea behind that. It was not deportation; we were paying non-essential workers and the church was not operating. So, we said, we don’t need anyone here. You can go back to your country. The person you claim to train under is no more here. These disciples, what did they come to do here? They came to train under TB Joshua, and TB Joshua is not here physically. You came to train under TB Joshua as a disciple. So, the intention of coming to Nigeria was not to take over the church, but to train under him,” she stated.

Promise said the church workers confessed the alleged atrocities of the disciples, adding that the departure of the leaders was a relief to many who had suffered under their yoke.

She slammed David for saying her mother was not trusted enough by the father to carry on with the ministry.

“My dad had always put his family as trustees of the church. I am not surprised; this is expected. The church will soon resume; these ones are the bad eggs,” she added.

A spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwajaren, confirmed that the case was being handled by the Lagos office of the agency.

Asked about the restraining order, he promised to find out and get back to our correspondent.

He had yet to do so as of press time.

US surgeons successfully attach a pig kidney to a human and it worked

US surgeons successfully attach a pig kidney to a human and it worked

For the first time, Surgeons in US have successfully attached a kidney grown in a genetically altered pig to a human patient and found that the organ worked normally.

The procedure done at NYU Langone Health in New York City involved use of a pig whose genes had been altered so that its tissues no longer contained a molecule known to trigger an almost immediate rejection, according to the Reuters news agency which reported on the news on Tuesday.

The recipient was a brain-dead patient with signs of kidney dysfunction whose family consented to the experiment before she was due to be taken off life support, researchers told the Reuters news agency.

For three days, the new kidney was attached to her blood vessels and maintained outside her body, giving researchers access to it.

Test results of the transplanted kidney’s function “looked pretty normal,” said transplant surgeon Dr Robert Montgomery, who led the study.

The kidney made “the amount of urine that you would expect” from a transplanted human kidney, he said, and there was no evidence of the vigorous, early rejection seen when unmodified pig kidneys are transplanted into non-human primates.

The recipient’s abnormal creatinine level – an indicator of poor kidney function – returned to normal after the transplant, Montgomery said.

In the United States, nearly 107,000 people are currently waiting for organ transplants, including the more than 90,000 awaiting a kidney, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing.

Kaduna Government To Bar Unvaccinated Civil Servants From Offices

The state government also said that visitors will only be permitted entry upon presentation of evidence of registration with the state Ministry of Health for vaccination while wearing their facemasks.

Governor

Gov Nasir El Rufai

The Katsina state government has disclosed that civil servants who have not taken the COVID-19 will be denied access to government offices from October 31.

The state government also said that visitors will only be permitted entry upon presentation of evidence of registration with the state Ministry of Health for vaccination, while wearing their facemasks.

The statement titled ‘Compliance with Covid protocols and vaccination required to access KDSG offices from 31st October 2021,’ signed by the Special Adviser to the Kaduna State Governor on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, reads;

“As it continues to balance public health considerations and the safe pursuit of livelihoods, the Kaduna State Government is constantly monitoring COVID-19 infections in the state and reviewing the pattern of spread.

“Based on these reviews, the State Covid-19 Taskforce has advised the government that the risk of mass infection by Covid-19 remains. This necessitates that careful attention must be paid to continued enforcement of preventive measures and encouraging residents of Kaduna State to practice personal responsibility more consistently. This is in line with the FORWARD campaign launched last year to help citizens adopt preventive measures as the state reopened after months of lockdown.

“The commencement of vaccinations against Covid-19 is the most significant development in the public health space since the virus began its tragic worldwide spread. Thus far, only a minority of Nigerians have been vaccinated against Covid-19 because of supply issues.

“But there is no such constraint against universal compliance by all residents of Kaduna State with the simple tests outlined in the FORWARD campaign: wear Facemasks, Observe physical distance, practice Respiratory hygiene, Wash hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, Avoid Large gatherings, Remain indoors as much as possible and eat immunity-boosting Diets.

“The Kaduna State Government will from 31st October 2021 require compliance with Covid-19 protocols, especially facemasks and vaccination, for access to its offices.

“The Ministry of Health has since commenced the vaccination of all civil servants, and this is expected to be completed by 31st October 2021. All civil servants are required to be vaccinated by that date.

“Visitors to government offices will need to present their vaccination cards. Given the limited supply of vaccines that are currently available, visitors that have not yet been vaccinated will, in the interim, be permitted entry upon presentation of evidence of registration with the state Ministry of Health for the purpose of vaccination, while wearing their facemasks.

“Commissioner of Health Dr. Amina Mohammed-Baloni has announced that residents are encouraged to register at the nearest primary health centre for Covid-19 vaccinations so that the relevant authorities can easily contact them as more Covid-19 vaccines become available.”

A news station has been hit with complaints after they played live porn in the background of a weather report.

In the clip, from KREM news in Washington, US, the news anchor is apparently oblivious to the x-rated scenes playing behind her head as she talks about the weather.

"How long is it going to last?" asks anchor Cody Proctor as she discusses the warm weather in the state.

With naked people writhing on the screen above her shoulder, meteorologist Michelle Boss replies: "It can't last forever, but it can last until the start of the week at least.

"And it looks like we're going to get some bonus days of nice weather after a mild weekend and gorgeous temperatures."

The women acted as if the explicit scenes were not playing, so it's likely they couldn't see what was being played on the screen.

KREM apologized to viewers hours later, during the 11pm newscast when an anchor said: "An inappropriate video aired in the first part of the show.

"We are diligently working to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again."

A statement issued by the Spokane City Police Department described the porn as a "disturbing image" and that it "generated numerous calls from concerned citizens in the city and county".

It's not yet clear if the porn was the result of a cyber attack or somebody with access to the studio.

Police said they were investigating and so far nobody has been found responsible

[BREAKING] #EndSARSMemorial: Activists Begin Car Procession At Lekki Tollgate

This is despite a ban on protests in Lagos and the heavy presence of armed police personnel at the tollgate.

According to a report by The PUNCH, a car procession is currently going on at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos in memory of the #EndSARS protests of last year.

This is despite a ban on protests in Lagos and the heavy presence of armed police personnel at the tollgate.

The activists who turned up at the tollgate with their cars were seen waving Nigerian flags from inside the vehicles and honking the horns while singing solidarity songs.

Speaking to newsmen, they stated that they will continue going to and fro the tollgate as their own way of protesting.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that operatives of the Lagos State Police Command arrested two protesters at the Lekki tollgate where the #EndSARS Memorial Protest is scheduled to hold in the state today.

Army 'Rewards' Military Officer Who Dehumanized NYSC Member

Several organizations and individuals, including the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, who had earlier promised to personally take the bull by the horns by seeking for justice, seem to be dragging their feet at the moment.

Ezeiruaku Ifenyinwa
Ezeiruaku Ifenyinwa

A female military officer, Lieutenant Chika Viola who dehumanized a member of the National Youth Service Corps, Ezeiruaku Ifeyinwa Fidelia has been rewarded instead of punished for her irresponsible act.

Fidelia is currently crying for justice as weeks after the incident, justice is still far away from her.

According to Daily Post, Fidelia revealed this in a letter drafted by her to a popular radio station where she decried the way and manner she has been abandoned to her fate.

Captioned “Nothing has happened since reporting my maltreatment to the military authorities”, she expressed sadness that instead of allowing the said female officer to face the wrath of the law, she was rewarded by allowing her to embark on a three-week course to Jaji in Kaduna State.

According to her, “After the incident, Lieutenant Chika Viola went for a three-week course in Jaji, Kaduna state, adding that “I know that once we end our service year, and I am not here again, the case will die.”

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which ought to assist her in pursuing her case, according to her “did not come to check on me” stressing that “they did not even ask to know the corper they did this to.”

DAILY POST also noticed that pressures have begun to be mounted on Fidelia to drop the case, as she said “the NYSC now called me and they were saying did I write through them before going to get a lawyer.”

Stressing how they have begun to arrange “things” against her, the NYSC, according to her letter “said I should bring down the case” adding that “they gave me a book and biro and asked me to write that I have withdrawn the case and that I should write formally through them. I left them and went away. I didn’t write anything and didn’t withdraw the case.”

Fidelia, who said she has made up her mind to tread every legitimate path to seek justice, said “I am suing Lieutenant Chika Viola and the army authorities. I am suing both of them.”

When the video of how she was publicly abused, maltreated and dehumanized by Lieutenant Chika Viola, went viral, it would be recalled that several organizations, groups and individuals came out to blame the female military officer, vowing to stake out their necks to seek justice for Fidelia.

DAILY POST, however, noticed that none of such groups, organizations and individuals, as at the time of filing this report, have fulfilled their pledges thereby leaving her to her fate.

#EndSARSAnniversary: Victims of police brutality yet to get justice one year after- Amnesty International

??

Human Rights group, Amnesty International (AI) says one year after the #EndSARS protests no security operative has been made to face justice for the “brutal crackdown” on peaceful protesters.

According to the group, eports of human rights violations by the police still continues one year after youths across the country took to the streets to demand an end to extrajudicial killings by the special anti-robbery squad (SARS), police brutality, harassment and bad governance in October 2020.

The protest reached its climax on October 20, 2020, when security operatives allegedly opened fire on the protesters at Lekki tollgate in Lagos.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, October 20, Osai Ojigho, director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said the judicial panels of inquiry set up to investigate abuses of security operatives have not made any headway so far.

“Under the pretext of restoring order, horrific injuries were inflicted on hundreds of people and at least 56 people were killed, among them dozens of young people lost their lives as Nigerian security forces used unnecessary and excessive force to disperse peaceful protesters across the country,” Ojigho said.

“It is unacceptable that despite overwhelming evidence, the government continues to deny the use of live ammunition on protesters at Lekki toll gate exactly a year ago.

“Amnesty International had documented incidents at Lekki Toll Gate Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, showing the violent response of the Nigerian security forces to peaceful protests. The clear aim of the crackdown was to instil fear, discourage peaceful protests and punish those demanding an end to widespread human rights violations by the police.

“After reviewing videos and photos of the protest sites, Amnesty International found that in nearly 21 incidents where violence occurred between peaceful protesters and pro-government supporters, security forces not only failed to take preventive measures to avoid peaceful assemblies from being disrupted, but they also failed to protect protesters from violent attacks.

“In many instances, the police and other security agents watched as apparently government-backed armed thugs attacked peaceful protesters. In some cases, these thugs were brought to the protest sites in government vehicles. On at least two occasions, these attacks resulted in the death of protesters.

“Almost every person arrested during the protests described being beaten with the butt of a gun, whips and fists during their arrests. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 12 journalists were attacked during the #EndSARS protests by security forces and unidentified perpetrators.

“Many of those detained interviewed by Amnesty International said that they were tortured while in detention. In many cases, police abuse continued in detention, in police stations and other holding facilities, and on the way to detention, in police vehicles. Several such cases amount to torture and other ill-treatment”.

“Several lawyers and human rights defenders said they spent days moving from one police station to another trying to find out where those who had been arrested were being,” AI said.

“One person arrested during a protest on 18 October 2020 and held at Lagos state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Panti, said he repeatedly asked to call a lawyer. He was told by a police officer to shut up. While in detention, he was denied access to a lawyer who had come to see him and was unable to meet with a lawyer until a week after being arrested.

“Providing timely access to lawyers is an important safeguard for many human rights, such as the right to a fair trial and ensuring the detainee’s rights are respected in custody, including the right to access medical care when needed, as well as protection from coerced confessions and torture and other ill-treatment”

“What we observed at these panels is discouraging and clearly shows there is no real commitment to ensuring justice for victims of police violence across Nigeria. These panels raised hopes of getting justice but in some states, this is quickly vanishing,” said Ojigho.

US Department of Justice charges 11 Nigerians with online fraud and money laundering

US Department of Justice charges 11 Nigerians with online fraud and money laundering

11 Nigerians were on Wednesday October 13, indicted by the U.S. Justice Department on charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, in connection with their involvement in laundering millions of dollars in proceeds derived from business email compromises and romance fraud schemes.

Charges against the suspects identified as Adedayo John, Oluwadamilola Akinpelu, Kazeem Raheem, Morakinyo Gbeyide and Warris Adenuga a.k.a Blue, Smart Agunbiade, Lateef Goloba, Samsondeen Goloba, Olawale Olaniyan, Olawoyin Peter Olanrewaju and Emmanuel Oronsaye-Ajayi, were announced after their indictment were unsealed by Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Patrick J. Freaney, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the United States Secret Service.

The defendants were accused of allegedly utilizing a myriad of fraud schemes, including romance scams and business email compromises, to defraud over 50 victims in excess of $9 million.

In some instances, business email compromise fraud schemes were used to trick businesses into transferring funds to bank accounts the victims believed were under the control of legitimate recipients of the funds as part of normal business operations, when in fact the bank accounts were under the control of the Defendants or their co-conspirators.

In other instances, romance scams were used, primarily through electronic messages sent via email, text messaging, social media, or online dating websites, to deceive victims, many of whom were vulnerable older men and women into believing they were in romantic relationships with fake identities, and then using false pretenses to cause the victims to transfer funds to bank accounts controlled by the Defendants or their co-conspirators.

The statement shared on the website of the US Department of Justice, reads;

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Patrick J. Freaney, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the United States Secret Service (“Secret Service”), announced today the unsealing of an Indictment charging 11 defendants with conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft, in connection with their involvement in laundering millions of dollars in proceeds derived from business email compromises and romance fraud schemes.  Nine defendants were arrested today in the District of New Jersey and the Eastern District of New York, and will be presented this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in the Southern District of New York.  One defendant was arrested in the Southern District of Texas, and will be presented today in that district’s federal court.  One defendant remains at large.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “As alleged, the defendants were part of a criminal enterprise that not only defrauded businesses by assuming the online identities of legitimate counterparties, but also preyed on vulnerable elderly people, deceiving victims into sending money in phony romance scams.  Thanks to the Secret Service, the defendants are now facing federal felony charges.”

Secret Service Special Agent-in-Charge Patrick J. Freaney said: “As the continued threat posed by cyber enabled fraud remains ever present, the U.S. Secret Service remains steadfast in its pursuit of those who threaten our collective financial security. This case is no exception, as the defendants allegedly utilized a myriad of fraud schemes, to include romance scams and business email compromises, to defraud over 50 victims in excess of $9 million. Due to the efforts of the Secret Service and our partners at the New York City Police Department Financial Crimes Task Force, this organized group will no longer be able to operate its alleged scheme to defraud and will answer the charges brought against them in the Southern District of New York.”

As alleged in the Indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court:

ADEDAYO JOHN, OLUWADAMILOLA AKINPELU, KAZEEM RAHEEM, MORAKINYO GBEYIDE, WARRIS ADENUGA, a/k/a “Blue,” SMART AGUNBIADE, LATEEF GOLOBA, SAMSONDEEN GOLOBA, OLAWALE OLANIYAN, OLAWOYIN PETER OLAREWAJU, and EMMANUEL ORONSAYE-AJAYI (collectively, the “Defendants”) participated in one or both of a money laundering conspiracy and bank fraud conspiracy, which received funds stolen from victims.

Victims were typically defrauded in one of two ways.  In some instances, business email compromise fraud schemes were used to trick businesses into transferring funds to bank accounts the victims believed were under the control of legitimate recipients of the funds as part of normal business operations, when in fact the bank accounts were under the control of the Defendants or their co-conspirators.  In other instances, romance scams were used, primarily through electronic messages sent via email, text messaging, social media, or online dating websites, to deceive victims – many of whom were vulnerable older men and women – into believing they were in romantic relationships with fake identities, and then using false pretenses to cause the victims to transfer funds to bank accounts controlled by the Defendants or their co-conspirators.

As a result of these frauds, law enforcement officers have identified more than 50 victims who have transferred more than $9 million to bank accounts under the control of the Defendants.

Ten defendants – ADEDAYO JOHN, 32, OLUWADAMILOLA AKINPELU, 26, KAZEEM RAHEEM, 29, MORAKINYO GBEYIDE, 39, WARRIS ADENUGA, a/k/a “Blue,” 26, LATEEF GOLOBA, 27, SAMSONDEEN GOLOBA, 29, OLAWALE OLANIYAN, 41, OLAWOYIN PETER OLAREWAJU, 34, and EMMANUEL ORONSAYE-AJAYI, 30 – are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.  Nine defendants – ADEDAYO JOHN, 32, SMART AGUNBIADE, 28, OLUWADAMILOLA AKINPELU, 26, MORAKINYO GBEYIDE, 39, WARRIS ADENUGA, a/k/a “Blue,” 26, LATEEF GOLOBA, 27, SAMSONDEEN GOLOBA, 29, OLAWOYIN PETER OLAREWAJU, 34, and EMMANUEL ORONSAYE-AJAYI, 30 – are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.  One defendant – MORAKINYO GBEYIDE, 39 – is also charged with one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory consecutive sentence of two years in prison.  The maximum potential penalties are prescribed by Congress and are provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendants would be determined by a judge.

Mr. Williams praised the outstanding investigative work of the Secret Service.  The case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit.  Assistant United States Attorneys Kaylan E. Lasky and Matthew Weinberg are in charge of the prosecution.

The charges contained in the Indictment are merely allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Mikel Obi finally reveals why he snubbed Manchester United for Chelsea

Mikel Obi finally reveals why he snubbed Manchester United for Chelsea

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has finally revealed why he snubbed Manchester United and signed for Chelsea in 2006.

Mikel, who spent 11 trophy-laden years at Stamford Bridge after signing from Norwegian club, Lyn Oslo, disclosed that he joined Cheslea because the futures of three other Nigerian players were tied to the deal.

Before his move to Chelsea, the midfieder first had an agreement in principle with Chelsea, but was tricked into penning a deal with Manchester United and had even spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson on the phone.

This led to a legal battle between Lyn Oslo, Man Utd and Chelsea, while FIFA also intervened.

At the end, Mikel eventually signed for Chelsea, who paid a compensation fee of £12m to Manchester United and £4m to Lyn.

During that period, three of Mikel Obi’s teammates at U-20 level, Chinedu Obasi, Emmanuel Sarki and Ezekiel Bala, were also undergoing trials at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel Obi, who currently plays for Kuwait SC, told The Athletic: “When I chose Chelsea, it wasn’t just my life that changed.

“There were four lives that changed. Why? Because if I didn’t, Chelsea might not have anything to do with my three friends. I was close to them. I knew their families.

“I didn’t just make the decision for myself. I thought about them, I thought about their families. This gave them more of a chance.”

Compensate South-east For Civil War Losses - Hope Uzodinma Tells FG

Uzodinma said the special fund would provide succour to those who lost their properties and family members during the civil war.

Gov Hope Uzodinma

Gov Hope Uzodinma has called on the Federal government to establish a special fund to compensate the south-east over the loss of lives and property during the civil war.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 13, in Owerri, Imo state capital, as he declared open a zonal public hearing on the review of the revenue allocation sharing formula.

Uzodinma said the special fund would provide succour to those who lost their properties and family members during the civil war.

The event was organised by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). He said;

“I think the debacles of the civil war led the south-east into a deep poverty level; houses were burnt down, people were killed,” Uzodinma said.

“Only recently, a special law was enacted as the North-East Development Commission, arising from the disaster of Boko Haram incidents. But the 30-month civil war that ended in 1970 left the south-east in a state of penury.”

The governor said the south-east has suffered “great injustice” on how revenues accruing from the zone are shared.

“Today, as it stands, the federal government takes home 52.68 per cent, state governments, 26.72 per cent, while the 774 local government areas take home 20.60 per cent,” he said.

He said Imo currently has seven oil-producing companies but 43 oil wells were “wrongfully” allocated to Rivers.

Uzodinma said 25 percent of gas production in Bonny is piped from Imo, but revenue accruing from it does not go to the state “while pollution is threatening the lives and assets of the residents of the area”.

“It should not just be about multi-billion-dollar pipeline projects that siphon oil and gas from the state which results to youth restiveness, quantum violence and subsequent deaths,” the governor said.

“I think that God did not make mistake endowing Imo with natural resources.”
